Tunisia - A Paradise For Tourists

Tunisia - A Paradise For Tourists By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jitesh_Arora]Jitesh Arora Tunisia, the northernmost country on the African continent is the smallest of the nations situated along the Atlas mountain range. The country got its name from its capital city, Tunisia. The present form of its name, with the suffix -ia, is derived from French Tunisie. French geographers and historians are responsible for introducing the name as it was their wish to give new names to their new occupied territories and protectorates. Even though natural resources are less in Tunisia unlike its neighboring countries, the living standards are high compared to developing countries. A well developed infrastructure is the specialty of the country ranging from its hotels, restaurants and international airports. Another notable feature of the country is that a large number of Tunisian hotels are located along the bay or coast. These hotels pick up a resort theme and arrange wide variety of fun activities like surfing, swimming, golfing and sailing. Horse-back and camel riding surfaces are also found along the roads. A large number of international cuisine restaurants are found in Tunisia along with local Tunisian ones. Tunisian food is highly popular, with Tajine (a fish dish), Couscous and Dorado (beam) being the specialty dishes. Tunisians are fun loving people. The night clubs in the major tourist resorts, beach hotels and big city hotels avouch this fact. Lot of ongoing productions and concerts are set up local and foreign companies. No wonder the place is a paradise for tourists. The handicraft shops are yet another feature worth mentioning. Anything Tunisian from carpets to handicraft pots and plates are available here. But tourists have to be careful here, since inflated prices will be mentioned by the sellers. One has to bargain well to get the desired items at reasonable rates. Ultimately, they are worth buying since the items are symbolic of Tunisia's rich history. Since around forty percent of the country is composed of the Sahara desert, you just cannot miss the deserts that Tunisia has to offer. One such place of great tourist attraction is Douz, called 'The Gateway to the Desert'. Here you can enjoy desert trekking; either via a four wheel drive or camel. The history and culture of Tunisian desert is well depicted in the Douz museum, which is a hot spot for the tourists. Majority of the Tunisian people are Muslims, ie 98%. Christians are a minority there comprising of 1% and the rest follow Judaism or other religions. One-third of the Jewish population lives in and around the capital while others live on the island of Djerba. Though Islam is the official religion, Tunisians are tolerant towards other religion. Tunisia got freedom from France in 1956. After this President Habib Bourguiba established a strict one party system. Dominating the country for 31 years, he repressed Islamic fundamentalism and established rights for women. This is something which you cannot find in any of the other Arab countries. As far as foreign relations are concerned, Tunisia takes a moderate, non-aligned stance. In a nut shell, Tunisia has everything to offer for a tourist. Tunisian tourist offices are set up in most European capitals to help the tourists planning a vacation. It would be a life time experience to enjoy the thrills of this fascinating country.
